B1 TV Channel

Profile

B1 TV is a Romanian television network that began broadcasting in 2001 as a generalist channel, which in 2011 turned into an all-news channel.

The operator of the channel, the company B1 TV Channel has two shareholders with equal stakes: George Constantin Paunescu and Sorin Oancea.

George Constantin Paunescu is a Romanian businessman and father of Bobby Paunescu, a domestic film director and producer who also owned media outlets in the country. George Constantin Paunescu was born in 1938 and held different positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during the era of the communist dictatorship led by Nicolae Ceausescu. He played a part in the controversial bankruptcy of Bancorex Bank in Romania. Sorin Oancea is the former director of the news television station Antena 3.

Currently there is a war going on between the two shareholders, the Paunescu family (involving Bobby Paunescu) and Oancea. Apparently, after 13 years of partnership, Paunescu tries to gain full control of B1TV and is challenging Oancea’s position as administrator of the company. The conflict between the two families started in August 2022, involving also Maricel Pacuraru (owner of Realitatea Plus and facing accusations of attempts at a forced takeover of Evenimentul Zilei and Capital). The conflict resulted in several lawsuits that are still ongoing.
