Profile
Gazeta de Cluj and Gazeta de Bistrita are local news portals covering Cluj and Bistrita counties, respectively. The publisher of the two portals is Bum Media, a company owned by Iulia-Anamaria Man (70%) and Tudor Borse (30%).
At the end of 2006, Liviu Man, the general director of the newspaper Gazeta de Cluj, was arrested and sent to court, along with five journalists working for the publication. According to the prosecutors, the six journalists allegedly threatened to publish disparaging information about businessmen and politicians in order to obtain significant sums of money in return. According to the investigators, some Cluj police bosses directly provided information to Liviu Man’s people about the files under investigation at the Cluj County Police Inspectorate. Pre-arrested in 2006, the journalists were released in March 2007. After 12 years of trials, the Galati Court of Appeal ordered the acquittal of all the defendants. The judge stated in his reasoning that “the prosecutor based his accusation of blackmail only on simple assumptions.”
