Universitatea Politehnica din Bucuresti is a state funded university in Bucharest. It signed in January 2020 a partnership with the Euronews group to launch the Romanian language channel Euronews. The station, which in November 2021 received a broadcast license from the media regulator in Romania, is headquartered on the university’s premises. Euronews Romania started to air in May 2022. In 2023, it had an audience of only some 2,000 viewers.
The Rector of the Universitatea Politehnica is Mihnea Costoiu, a former secretary of state and senator representing the Social Democratic Party (PSD). As a teenager, Costoiu allegedly worked as an informer of the Securitate, the secret police agency that served the repressive communist regime in Romania until 1989.
