Global Media Finances Map · Tech companies

The companies behind the world’s information gateways

GMFM maps the finances, ownership and corporate structures of technology companies that materially shape how news and public information are found, ranked, distributed, monetised or delivered. The map follows search, social and messaging platforms, browsers, publishing systems, creator networks and the cloud/edge infrastructure underneath them.

Why these companies belong in GMFM

Media power now sits outside media companies

News organisations may produce journalism, but technology companies increasingly determine whether audiences can find it, how it travels, which publishers can monetise it, and which technical infrastructure keeps it available. GMFM therefore follows companies that exercise material economic or technological power over the information chain.

01
Discovery

Search engines, portals, feeds, browsers and recommendation systems determine visibility.

02
Distribution

Social, messaging, video, audio and publishing platforms connect information to audiences.

03
Monetisation

Advertising systems, subscriptions, creator payments and licensing shape who captures economic value.

04
Infrastructure

Cloud, CDN and edge networks determine resilience, speed, scale and technical dependency.

The registry counts companies or material operating organisations, not every app, product or subsidiary. Search by company or product, or filter by gateway type, home market and reporting status.

Corporate-status note. GMFM uses the current operating company or documented group identity. For example, the former Twitter UK Ltd was renamed X Internet UK Limited in June 2026; Yandex is mapped under the current Russian-listed MKPAO Yandex rather than the former Dutch Yandex N.V.; and Mozilla Corporation is shown as nonprofit-owned because it is wholly owned by the Mozilla Foundation.

What GMFM tracks but does not publish here

The public registry shows what is mapped. The underlying work can go much deeper. These data layers can be compiled or extracted when reliable evidence exists, without turning the public page into a dump of raw corporate data.

Sources behind the map

GMFM prioritises audited accounts, exchange filings, national corporate records and regulator material. First-party company pages are used to resolve product portfolios, legal roles and current operating structures, then cross-checked where independent official records exist.

Scope & method

A tech map, not a list of every large technology company

Inclusion is based on information-system relevance, not market capitalisation alone. This keeps the registry aligned with the Media Influence Matrix rather than turning it into a generic technology index.

Included

Companies are mapped when they materially control or enable one or more stages of the public-information chain.

  • search and news-discovery gateways
  • social and messaging platforms
  • video, audio and creator distribution
  • browsers, app/device gateways and publishing platforms
  • cloud, CDN and edge infrastructure with material information-distribution relevance

Kept separate

AI-native companies whose principal relevance is generative AI remain in GMFM’s separate AI Companies section, even when their products increasingly overlap with search and publishing.

  • OpenAI
  • Anthropic
  • Mistral AI
  • Perplexity and other AI-native answer systems
  • future AI-company additions assessed under the AI map

Registry reviewed September 2026. Inclusion means the company is within GMFM’s research scope; it does not imply that a complete financial series is publicly obtainable for every private company or every jurisdiction.
