Mediahuis is a prominent media group in the Flemish media market of Belgium, along with DPG. It was formally established in 2014 through the merger of the Flemish publishers Corelio and Concentra in 2013.
This transformation significantly impacted the media landscape, resulting in the consolidation of all Flemish media outlets under the control of the two major groups: DPG Media Group and the newly created Mediahuis Group.
Since then, Mediahuis has experienced significant growth, both in Belgium and internationally, and now owns four leading daily newspapers in Belgium and has a strong presence in the Netherlands. Notably, the group expanded its international reach by acquiring the Irish Independent News & Media Group in 2019 and the pan-European EURACTIV Media in 2023.
Mediahuis is owned by different families via a series of subsidiaries, though it remains unclear who exactly the beneficial owners of those subsidiaries are. The information available, however, gives us some indication.
According to the Euromedia Ownership Monitor, Mediahuis directly belongs to three Flemish companies: Mediahuis Partners (50.6%), Concentra (32%), and VP Capital (16.3%).
VP Capital belongs to the Dutch Van Puijenbroek family. Concentra is primarily owned by the Dutch Zeven Eycken Foundation (approximately 90%), with the Belgian NGO Katholiek Impuls-en Mediafonds holding 8.7% and Concerta owning 1.3%.
Mediahuis Partners is owned by companies that are often controlled by a particular family. These include Cecan (Vlerick Sap family), Vedesta (Van de Steen family), Mediacore (Leysen and Sofinim families), and De Eik (van Waeyenberge family).
