The registry was assembled from current regulatory filings, corporate disclosures, newsroom records and independent-media directories. Discovery databases were used to broaden coverage, not as proof of current status: companies and organisations included in the registry were checked against a current official site, regulatory filing, membership record or other authoritative current source.

- Federal Communications Commission (FCC), including ownership, station and competition records, and the FCC’s current broadcast-market reports.
- U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR — 2025 annual reports and 2026 filings for publicly traded media companies, including Nexstar, Gray Media, Sinclair, Scripps, Lee Enterprises, iHeartMedia, Beasley, Saga and others.
- LION Publishers and its current member/sustainability resources — discovery and cross-checking of independent local publishers. LION reports more than 500 members across the U.S. and Canada in 2026.
- Institute for Nonprofit News — 2026 INN Index and current member records — verification and context for nonprofit journalism organisations.
- Global Project Oasis — discovery of independent digital/local news organisations; inclusion was independently re-verified against current sources.
