Global Media Finances Map · AI companies

The companies supplying AI to the information economy

GMFM maps the ownership, finances and corporate structures behind AI systems used in journalism and information work — from frontier assistants and newsroom workflow tools to real-time intelligence, synthetic media and verification technology.

Foundational GMFM research

From a 100-tool study to a living company map

MJRC’s 2024 study remains the empirical foundation of this work. The new page does not replace it: it converts the project into a current company registry that can be updated as companies grow, fail, merge, change ownership or enter journalism workflows.

Control Beyond Code · 2024

Ownership and Financial Insights of AI Used in Journalism

The study analysed the ownership, financial information and intended uses of 100 AI tools used by newsrooms and journalists. It used 17 variables and included a fact-checking case study to test how much corporate transparency journalists could realistically obtain about the tools entering editorial work.

33%adequately transparent
42%not transparent
25%somewhat transparent
23fact-checking tools in the sample
What changed: the 2024 research used a qualified convenience sample of tools actually used or recommended for journalism. This 2026 page instead maps a curated set of current companies with material relevance to journalism and the information ecosystem. It is therefore a living registry, not an updated claim that exactly these 40 companies reproduce the original 100-tool sample.
Functional map

Five ways AI enters journalism

The categories follow what the systems actually do in the information chain. A company can span several functions, but GMFM assigns one principal category to keep the registry searchable and avoid double-counting.

10

Foundation models & assistants

General-purpose language models, answer systems, agents and enterprise AI platforms used for research, writing and analysis.

9

Newsroom workflow & language

Transcription, translation, editing, writing, publishing automation and AI-assisted editorial production.

7

Research, monitoring & intelligence

Real-time event detection, open-source monitoring, trend discovery, narrative analysis and claim checking.

9

Synthetic media & production

AI-generated voice, image, video, avatars, dubbing and other audiovisual-production systems.

5

Verification & authenticity

Deepfake detection, provenance, C2PA, synthetic-content detection and media-forensics systems.

Search by company, product or function. Existing public GMFM work links directly to the relevant profile; the remaining companies are mapped into the research universe and route to the central data-request system.

Company / principal AI productsMap positionAccess
Current-company rule: GMFM maps the company responsible for the system, not every model or app as a separate entry. Corporate changes are reflected in the operating identity: for example, the company formerly called Grammarly is now Superhuman Platform, while Grammarly remains one of its products.
AI inside diversified tech groups

Shown here, not counted twice

Some of the most influential AI systems are operated by companies already mapped in GMFM’s Tech Companies section. They matter enormously to journalism, but counting the parent company in both registries would distort the map.

Gemini · Google DeepMind · AI Overviews / AI Mode · Vertex AI

Mapped under Tech Companies; Google is not counted again in the AI-company total.

GMFM data coverage

What GMFM can investigate beyond the public page

Private AI companies are often much harder to examine than listed media groups. The page therefore makes the research layers visible without pretending that every underlying filing, investor record or structured dataset should be published openly.

Sources behind the AI map

GMFM does not treat company marketing material as financial evidence. Company documentation is useful for products and legal roles; ownership and financial claims are cross-checked against registries, securities filings, transaction documents, regulators and other primary records wherever possible.

Scope & methodology

What counts as an AI company here

This page is narrower than a generic AI-industry directory but broader than a list of chatbots. Inclusion depends on a material connection to journalism, public information or the production and verification systems news organisations increasingly use.

Included

AI-focused companies are mapped when their products materially affect one or more newsroom or information functions.

  • foundation models and answer / assistant systems
  • transcription, translation, writing and editorial workflow
  • real-time research, monitoring and narrative intelligence
  • synthetic image, video and audio production
  • fact-checking, deepfake detection and media authenticity

Not double-counted

Diversified technology companies remain in the Tech Companies map. Their AI products are cross-linked above rather than entered again as separate parent companies.

  • Google / Alphabet
  • Microsoft
  • Meta
  • ByteDance / TikTok
  • Amazon and Apple
  • X-linked AI systems

Registry reviewed September 2026. Inclusion means that the company falls within GMFM’s research scope; it does not imply that complete ownership or financial data are publicly available for every private firm.
