Clever Group

Profile

Clever Business Transilvania acquired the generalist nationwide television station Prima TV in September 2020 for €5m. The station’s previous owner, Prima Broadcasting, had declared insolvency in 2015. Hence, it used half of the sum received for its assets to settle the outstanding debts to the state.

Clever Business Transilvania and Clever Media Network are part of Clever Group, a media conglomerate founded by the businessman Adrian Tomsa. Before taking over Prima TV, the group had thematic television stations and websites in its portfolio, including Look Plus, Look Sport, and Agro TV. Originally, Prima TV was launched in December 1997 by the businessman Cristi Burci, with an investment of US$ 20m. In 2005, Burci sold the television to SBS Broadcasting, which was later taken over by German-owned ProSiebenSat.1.
In 2013, ProSiebenSat.1 sold Prima TV back to Burci, who sold it to businessman Tomsa a few years later. Tomsa is known to be a close friend of Zoltan Teszari, the owner of RCS/RDS group.

In May 2024, Tomsa and Teszari reportedly planned to buy Telekom Romania, a major telecom operator. In the same month, Clever announced the launch of Prima World. Initially, the channel was intended to operate as Prima Food & Travel, but Clever’s management changed its mind and, with the approval of the media regulator, reconfigured the channel’s profile.
