Gandul Media Network

Profile

Gandul Media Network is a publisher of several websites including the tabloid news portal Cancan, sports website Prosport and the news server Gandul. The company is fully owned by Cristina Budeanu, a fashion maker known in Romania for her relationships with renowned Romanian footballers and her numerous esthetic surgeries. She is married to Radu Budeanu, a millionaire involved in a series of scandals involving politicians, money laundering and influence peddling.

Since its takeover by the Budeanu family, Gandul news portal has raised suspicions of bias, independent observers saying that it serves various political and business interests.

Originally, Gandul was founded in 2005 by a former editorial team from Adevarul newspaper led by Cristian Tudor Popescu who left Adevarul in protest. Adrian Sarbu, a media mogul who founded Pro TV, bought the newspaper in 2006. Its print edition was folded in 2011. In 2019, Sarbu sold five of his media brands, including Gandul, to Radu Budeanu, who was the founder of the tabloid newspaper Cancan and paparazzi magazine Ciao!. The transaction also included the Descopera, CSID, Apropo TV and Go4IT brands.
