Profile
Gazeta Nord-Vest is a daily newspaper that was founded in 1990. It still appears in its printed version as well. Its publisher, Nord Vest TV Advertising, is controlled by Razvan Govor, who is also the owner of the broadcaster Nord-Vest TV.
The newspaper and the TV station in Satu Mare were originally owned by Razvan Govor’s father, Mircea Govor who is the president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) local branch in Satu Mare county and who was the vice president of the County Council in Satu Mare. Mircea Govor is often referred to in the Romanian media as a PSD “baron”. He started his professional career as a waiter. After the fall of communism in Romania in 1989, he opened a nightclub in Satu Mare. He also had a alcohol trade business, Roxalcom, which went bankrupt with hefty debts to the state.
Mircea Govor was investigated for corruption, being accused of blackmailing people in power to win public tenders and he used his newspaper as an instrument of pressure in the process. In 2019, Mircea Govor was sentenced to two years in prison, but, on appeal, he was acquitted two years later. He is now suing the Romanian state asking for €1m for moral compensation.
