Profile
Prima Press is the largest publisher of Hungarian media in Romania. The publisher is 100% owned by Asociația pentru Spațiul Media Transilvan. According to journalistic investigations run by Romanian media, the Hungarian government invested some €5m in Hungarian-language media in the north-western region of Transylvania in Romania over the course of five years (2017-2022). In 2022, forced by the economic crisis in Hungary, the government in Budapeste has reportedly decided to cut the funding sent to the media it supported in Romania. As a result, more than 70% of the staff filling those newsrooms were axed.
The Hungarian government uses the Hungarian-language media in Transylvania to spread propaganda consisting of criticism of the Romanian government and Romanians in general, promotion of the conservative political party Fidesz of the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and spreading the Hungarian government’s claim that Hungary should take over the Transylvania region.
The main news portals run by Prima Press are Szekelyhon.ro, which distributes Hungary-related information for the Hungarian community in Romania, Kronikaonline.ro, a generalist news portal, Foter.ro, a news site that offers national news and information, sarcastically describing the Romanian government and churning out Hungarian government propaganda, and Liget.ro, a lifestyle and culture focused information website. These websites are all published in Hungarian. Many of the same articles can be found in all of them.
