What data we collect and why
Comments When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help with spam detection. An anonymised string derived from your email address may be shared with the Gravatar service to check whether you use it; their privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. Approved comments display your profile picture publicly alongside the comment.
Media If you upload images to the website, please avoid including embedded location data (EXIF GPS). Visitors can download and extract location data from any images on the site.
Cookies We use cookies for the following purposes. Functional cookies are set if you leave a comment and opt to save your name, email address, and website for future visits; these last for one year. Temporary session cookies are set when you visit the login page to check whether your browser accepts cookies; these contain no personal data and expire when you close your browser. If you log in, cookies are set to save your login information and screen display preferences, lasting two days (or two weeks if you select “Remember Me”). If you edit or publish an article, a short-lived cookie records the post ID; this expires after one day.
Analytics This site uses Google Analytics, connected via Google Site Kit, to collect anonymised data about how visitors use the site — including pages visited, time spent, and general geographic location. This data is processed by Google and subject to Google’s Privacy Policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy). Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish users. No personally identifiable information is sent to Google through this service. You may opt out of Google Analytics tracking by using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on (https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout).
The legal basis for processing analytics data is our legitimate interest in understanding how our research content is used and improving our publications.
Embedded content from other websites Articles on this site may include embedded content such as videos, images, or interactive elements from third-party websites. Embedded content behaves as if you had visited those websites directly; they may collect data about you, use cookies, and track your interactions.
Who we share your data with
If you request a password reset, your IP address is included in the reset email. Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
How long we retain your data
Comments and their metadata are retained indefinitely to allow us to recognise and approve follow-up comments automatically. For registered users, personal information is stored in your user profile and can be seen, edited, or deleted at any time (except for the username). Website administrators can also see and edit this information.
Your rights
Under GDPR, you have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of any personal data we hold about you. You may also object to processing, request restriction of processing, or request data portability. To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at mjrc@journalismresearch.org. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with Estonia’s data protection authority, the Andmekaitse Inspektsioon (AKI), at https://www.aki.ee.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service. Analytics data is processed by Google on servers which may be located outside the European Economic Area; Google provides appropriate safeguards under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
