Ringier Romania

Profile

For over 30 years, Ringier, a Swiss-owned publisher, has been active in Central and Eastern Europe in the areas of media, digital marketplaces and sports media. Its business activities in the region were launched in 1990 in the former Czechoslovakia. In 1992, it expanded to Romania, with Bulgaria, Poland, and Hungary following in 1993.

In 2016, Ringier and Axel Springer bundled their international activities in Central and Eastern Europe and founded the joint venture Ringier Axel Springer Media with assets in Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Baltic States. In 2021, Ringier acquired all of Axel Springer’s shares in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Hungary. The joint venture in Poland remains unchanged. The year 2023 marked Ringier’s market entry in Greece.

Founded in 1992, Ringier Romania is the largest publishing group in Romania by revenue and a key player in the country’s media market. Ringier Romania is the local subsidiary of Ringier in Romania. The company’s portfolio includes titles and portals such as Libertatea, Noizz, ELLE, Viva!, Unica, Avantaje, Glamour, Revista Psychologies, eJobs, WeAreHR and Imobiliare.

In December 2023, the publisher fired the management of Libertatea and Gazeta Sporturilor newspapers, as well as a fifth of the journalists of Libertatea. Media freedom NGOs criticized the decision saying that the journalists were fired for their opposition to taking advertisements from the online gaming and sports betting industry.
