The news portal Spotmedia.ro was launched in June 2020 by a group of journalists who left Ziare.com following disagreements with the site’s administrator. The journalists left as a result of the repeated attempts of intervention by the management in the editorial agenda of the news site.
At the time, all 30 or so staff of Ziare.com, journalists but also people working on technology-related services and sales, left the newsroom along with its head Serinela Spatarelu who later became the head and majority owner of Spot Agency and editor in chief of Spotmedia.ro.
On the other hand, the management of Ziare.com was unhappy with the situation as the news portal Ziare.com, although owned by New Century Holdings (NCH), was actually run by Alert News, a company owned by Spatarelu.
Spatarelu has a 51% stake in Spot Agency.
